3 Holiday Shopping Scams to Watch for This Season

Holiday shopping brings great deals, but it also brings more scams than any other time of year.

Stay aware of these three shopping red flags to avoid the stress that comes from getting caught in a bad deal:

1. “Too Good to Be True” Discounts
Retailers and scammers both know that holiday urgency leads to fast decisions. Some inflate their prices leading up to the holidays so their “sales” look impressive. Others advertise deals so extreme they’re obviously fake or impossible to obtain once you read the terms and conditions.

RED FLAGS:

• Prices far below typical holiday discounts
• A “sale” based on inflated pre-holiday prices
• No price history to validate the discount
• Countdown timers meant to create panic

HOW TO STAY SAFE:

Use BrickSeek to check real-time pricing and compare deals across multiple retailers. If the price doesn’t line up with past trends or competing stores, skip it.

2. Holiday-Specific Store Policies
Stores often change their rules during the holiday rush, and those changes can turn a “great deal” into a bad decision.

RED FLAGS

• Price matching paused during the holiday season
• Exchange-only returns instead of full refunds
• Shortened return windows
• Item-specific exclusions for popular categories

HOW TO STAY SAFE:

Read a store’s holiday policies and fine print before buying. Make sure any seasonal rules or restrictions won’t trap you with something you can’t return.

3. Suspicious Texts and Emails
Scammers know shoppers expect shipping notices, receipts, promo codes, and delivery alerts this time of year. They use that expectation to slip in fake messages and will impersonate retailers, shipping carriers, and even family members.

RED FLAG

• Promises of free gift cards or unusually large coupon codes
• Requests for personal information to “unlock” a deal
• “Order Confirmation” or “Delivery Failure” emails for items you didn’t buy
• Links or URLs that look close, but not identical, to a retailer’s website

HOW TO STAY SAFE:

Never open links inside unexpected emails or texts. Go directly to a retailer’s website or app to check your orders. Delete any message asking for sensitive information.

Holiday shopping should feel simple, not stressful. BrickSeek makes it easier to shop with confidence, compare prices across all major retailers, see whether a discount is truly a good deal, and avoid the scams that show up this time every year.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
